  General Notes:

Since their mothers Jane and Dinah were sisters, John Clarke 1827-1900 and Mary Jakeman Heywood 1828-1916 were first cousins. According to Dr. Dick Webb, who married a Clarke and did some research, John and Mary came to Victoria in 1854 and lived together as husband and wife. A John Clarke aged 27 is listed as an unassisted immigrant arriving in Victoria on the SS Morning Star in August 1854 but there is no sign of Mary (Clarke or Heywood). Mary claimed that she and John had been married in Yorkshire in 1854 but this is not confirmed. Mary's mother, Dinah Heywood (nee Turton), is said to have arrived in Melbourne on 1/3/1857 as an assisted migrant working as a laundress on the SS Herald of the Morning, accompanied by her niece (Jane's daughter) Mary A Heywood. The same voyage also brought Ellen Heywood (18) and Maria Heywood (21). Ellen is probably George William Heywood's sister Ellen Amelia (born 1838) but I don't know who Maria might be. The notoriously inconsistent ages and name spellings on censuses, birth indices and immigration lists turn this research into an art rather than a science.

At any rate in the following year Mary Jakeman Heywood and John Clarke were definitely married in East Melbourne on 23/6/1858, probably at Dinah's insistence.
They had eight children.
(1) Charles Edward Clarke 1855-1935, married Jessie Howe Houghton in 1881
(2) John William Clarke 1857-1918, married Emily Tatlow in 1877, no issue
(3) George Frederick Clarke 1860-1940, married Julie Walker in 1886
(4) Albert Heywood Clarke 1862-1939, married Maybelle Savage in 1888
(5) Thomas Turton Clarke 1864-1943, who married Theresa Taylor in 1905
(6) Richard Henry Clarke, a twin of Thomas, who died at age one.
(7) James Richard Clarke 1866-1935, who married Susannah Johnstone
(8) Mary Ellen Clarke born March 1869 and died in December aged six months.
